Japan Airlines recently unveiled a plan to install bamboo wheelchairs at two airports in early 2011.

The chairs are part of a pilot program aimed at reducing the length of screening processes at Japanese airports.

The metal wheelchairs currently in use often lead to delays as they trigger sensors in airport metal detectors.

According to airline officials, the new bamboo chairs will be completely metal-free and should not trigger any security alarms.

A number of the chairs will be unveiled in the coming months at Haneda Airport in Tokyo as well as Oita Airport in Kunisaki.
