Soak Up Cancun After the Spring Break Frenzy!

Year after year, Cancun remains one of the top destinations in both Mexico and the Western Hemisphere, drawing millions of visitors, many from the United States, Canada, and Europe, who seek sun, surf and serenity.

With 14 miles of pristine white beaches, Cancun offers guests endless hotel and resort options and vacation packages for just about every personality and interest. When is the best time to go and what do you need to know when you're there? Here are three travel tips that are key for a summer vacation in Cancun.

Cheap Deals

Tourism peaks around and after the winter holidays and during the months of spring break, which can run from February through April. Summers are often when things start to slow down, which can be a great time to find cheap flights to Cancun as well as great deals on all-inclusive packages. So if you don't mind the sunny days and balmy nights, summer can be an ideal time to enjoy more of Cancun after the frenzy of spring break has quieted down.

Sun Protection

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! Throughout the months of June, July, and August, daytime temperatures in Cancun reach an average of 90 degrees and nights only get down to 78 degrees. Remember to pack sunglasses, hats, and waterproof sunscreen that protect against both UVA and UVB rays, and to reapply sunscreen every two to three hours. If you forget sunscreen, most of Cancun's hotels and resorts sell sun protection on the premises. UVA and UVB rays are at the most intense between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., which may be a good time to read a book in the shade or head indoors to Cancun's newest addition is the Maya Museum, a $15 million investment, featuring 350 Mayan artifacts, some said to have never been publicly displayed before, and 14,000-year-old skeletal remains discovered in nearby Tulum. There is also downtown Cancun's La Isla shopping center where visitors can find luxury goods and high-end designers. Also, remember that hurricane season in the Atlantic runs from June 1 through November 30. Cancun's hotels and resorts are very good about communicating to guests about any precautions that need to be taken in the event of a storm.

Getting Around

Transportation throughout Cancun is considered quite safe, but wherever you go, use common sense and avoid traveling alone, particularly at night. Taxis are readily available as well as reliable, but only use taxis clearly designated as a company-owned taxi service. Many hotels offer free shuttle service between resort properties and Cancun's airport.  The city's bus system is also very good and reliable, rides are often less than one US dollar, and many bus drivers know enough English to help out tourists with questions. Bus service runs frequently from Cancun's downtown area to its ferry terminal where you can catch a 25-minute ferry ride to nearby Isla Mujeres, a smaller island that offers a more rustic Mexican experience. Once on the island, you can rent a golf cart for about $45 USD for three hours to get around.
