The leaves are turning, and you desperately need a quick,
relaxing fall getaway. A long weekend in Vermont is the perfect remedy. With
cheap tickets to the Green Mountain State, you can enjoy what is considered the
most spectacular time of year in Vermont, when the state is briefly a
cornucopia of color. Festivals celebrating the fall harvest, local arts and
crafts, and food are happening all over the state.

Good With a Chainsaw?
Chainsaw is big in Vermont, and the best time to see it is
October 9-14 during the Big
Buzz Carving Festival in Chester, Vermont, on Route 103. More than 20
carvers display their talents and work, and an art auction will be held.  Watch chainsaw carvers at work and take a
tour of artist and event organizer Barre Pinske's gallery and studio in
Chester.

Go Stowe!
Stowe is one of my favorite mountain towns, and is one of
Vermont's most popular ski resorts thanks to the 4,393-foot Mount Mansfield,
the state's tallest peak. From October 11-13 is the Stowe Foliage Arts Festival,
combining the town's year-round love for the arts with fall season splendor. The
weekend is an opportunity to see and buy a wide range of traditional and
contemporary artwork and crafts, including photography, painting, and
sculpture, and to enjoy live music, great food, and beer (it is October, after
all).

Like Pie?
The Dummerston Apple Pie Festival on October 13 at the
Dummerston Congregational Church tends to sell out just about every year. Leave
worries about your waistline behind and come out to choose from more than 1,500
pies. Enjoy a whole pie or pie by the slice. There's also fresh apple cider,
donuts, and ice cream, for those who prefer their pies a la mode.

Get Lost on the Farm
Visit the Gaines Farm
in Guilford, Vermont, and enjoy its spooktacular Haloween events every Friday
and Saturday night from October 11-26. Get lost on the farm's giant, seven-acre
(and haunted) corn maze. Take a haunted hay ride. Enjoy a bonfire and a
twilight maze walk. There's also pumpkin bowling, the cow train, and the corn
cannon. Check it out.
