Things are getting hot up north this winter with seasonal celebrations already underway in the great Scottish capital of Edinburgh. Here's the scoop on how to make the most of a Yuletide visit to one of Europe's most fun and scenic cities.


St Andrew’s Day 2013
November 30


In celebration of Scotland’s national day, this brand new family-friendly event in the city’s atmospheric Grassmarket – Edinburgh's historic market square located in Old Town – will include headline performances from some of Scotland’s very best contemporary folk musicians, storytelling, music workshops, a spectacular outdoor Ceilidh with a stellar line-up of artists.


Edinburgh’s Christmas
November 22 to January 5


Edinburgh's winter celebrations are set to be spectacular with iconic favorites such as Princes Street Gardens’ weatherproofed ice rink and the chance to search for Santa's secret workshop, wind your way through a the giant Christmas Tree Maze or take a tour onboard the new Santa train. For the first time a new Christmas hub of attractions can also be found at St Andrew Square. There will be outside markets, parties, rides and more, including the 60 metre-high Star Flyer. Shows along the lines of a circus, cabaret and daytime productions such as Little Red Riding Hood ensure there will be something for everyone.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay
December 30 to January 5


The world’s biggest street party and by far Edinburgh's biggest bash, Hogmanay means four days of events, five stages of bands and DJs, fireworks and a torch-lit procession all in celebration of the New Year. With the Pet Shop Boys leading a stellar line-up, the multi-million selling group is being joined by Edinburgh band, Django Django, Chvrches and Nina Nesbitt. The Loony Dook – an icy swim in the Forth on New Year's Day – is the perfect antidote to any lingering headaches from the night before!  Tickets are on sale now.
