A 48-hour general strike is disrupting all aspects of life in Greece as protests against the government’s proposed austerity measures intensify. In some places the protests have turned violent, with rock-throwing protestors being met with tear gas grenades from police.

Walkouts by the nation’s air traffic controllers are shutting down many Greek airports for hours at a time. Similar strikes have also affected trains, ferries, and bus lines. In Athens the only form of public transportation available is the Metro which has been kept open only to shuttle Athenians to and from protest sites.

Polls suggest that 70% to 80% of Greeks oppose the austerity plan which would cut public services and increase the tax burden on Greek citizens.
