Strike Looms for British Airways Over Holiday Season CheapOair Staff December 14, 2009 general British Airways staff set to strike starting December 22 Holiday travel plans for nearly one million passengers using British Airways are now in disarray as BA’s cabin crew overwhelmingly voted in favor of a strike that will begin on December 22. The strike follows a long dispute between Britain’s number one carrier and their unions, after British Airways cut costs in order to survive the economic crisis that has seen a major decrease in passenger numbers. Len McCluskey said that the union was upset that it has come down to this strike and was still interested in talking with British Airways in order to avoid a disruption during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. The British Airlines Stewards and Stewardesses Association, a section of Unite, echoed those sentiments in a statement. More than 12,500 BA employees, balloted by trade union Unite in November, voted by an overwhelming 92.5 percent to walk out starting December 22 for 12 consecutive days.
