Japan Airlines plans to get out of debt faster than planned

Japan Airlines plans to reduce its network by discontinuing 15 international routes and suspend 30 domestic routes as part of a major restructuring effort.

After filing for bankruptcy in January, JAL is going to slash international routes from Tokyo to Amsterdam, Milan, Rome and Sao Paulo. This is in addition to the already planned route cuts announced by JAL, which brings the total to 28 international and 50 domestic routes slashed when all is said and done.

Japan Airlines said with these new moves, it plans to get out of the red in one year as compared to the previous idea of three. Another tactic that JAL will be using to save money is to outsource some of its air maintenance workers. JAL received 1,000 additional early retirement requests than it was expecting originally.
