Movie buffs boarding flights to Los Angeles may soon have a new place to get their cinematic fix. A movie museum is coming to Los Angeles, though like many Hollywood projects facing budget constraints, plans have been scaled back from original soaring heights.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Tuesday that it plans to join forces with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) to develop a movie museum inside part of the institution’s existing structure.

That plan is quite a departure from a previous attempt by the Academy to build an enormous, free-standing museum near Sunset Boulevard. Following a Hollywood writers’ strike in 2007 and the economic uncertainty of 2008, fundraising for that project came to a screeching halt.

While the newly announced museum would cost far less to construct, the actual space would be much larger. The LACMA project would allow for 300,000 square feet of exhibition space.

According to an Academy spokesperson, the museum could be open within three to five years if all goes according to plan.
