Today British Airways’ executive, Willie Walsh, announced the most recent day of strike action by cabin crew “a failure”, declaring the number of passengers who had taken flights regardless of the trade union Unite’s plan to keep all planes grounded.

Walsh claimed the airline had kept its promise to fly thousands of passengers on Sunday, regardless of the strike.  “Yesterday we flew over 72,000 customers on a day of strike by Unite and, as I say, they have failed,” he said. “They have failed in their efforts.”

Walsh wouldn’t comment on the current state of negotiations between BA and Unite, stating that he’d already promised not to speak publicly about the situation.

Members of Unite will continue to strike until Wednesday but the union has said it is prepared to hold a fresh strike if an agreement is not reached soon.

The quarrel centers on travel concessions that have been taken away from BA employees who have been involved in strike action. It could lead to heavy disturbances over the busy months of summer.
