Los Angeles is a vibrant metropolis teeming with fun things to do and vast, diverse neighborhoods in which to do it. But unlike New York, with its great transit system, LA is difficult to get around – difficult, but not impossible, especially if you confine your sightseeing to one small area of the city. To help you on your way, we’ve put together a fun list of things to do in Los Angeles with just one day to spare!

Shop at the Original Farmers Market

Start by getting yourself the LA Metro Day Pass which allows unlimited travel by bus or Metrorail for 24 hours. Use it to make your way to the first stop, The Original Farmers Market on the corner of 3rd and Fairfax. Located just south of West Hollywood, the Original Farmers Market first started in July 1934 when a dozen farmers began selling produce out of their trucks. The market is now one of LA’s oldest and most well-known landmarks where residents and visitors alike shop for fresh produce, meats, and ready-to-eat snacks. There’s no charge for entry and parking at either of the market’s two lots is free for the first 90 minutes with a ticket validated from the market.

Go on a Melting Pot Tour

Melting Pot Food Tours offers scrumptious food-tasting tours around Los Angeles that include artisan butchers, bakers, confectioneries, a gourmet grocery emporium with a gourmet cheese counter, and even the chance to meet local celebrity chefs as well as the Original Farmers Market. Check out the Cars at the Petersen Automotive Museum

The Petersen Automotive Museum is one of the largest automotive collections in the world and is one of the most unique things to do in Los Angeles. The museum takes up an entire city block and houses over 300 cars, trucks, and motorcycles. Some of the items in these 25 galleries were owned by celebrities and made famous in moves and TV shows. The museum has over 100 vehicles on public display with the rest of the museum’s vault. Just a few of the exhibits include:

• One of only two 1939 Porsche 64s in existence
• The NASCAR Herbie used in the filming of the movie Herbie
• The 1992 Batmobile used in the movie Batman Returns.

Admire Amazing Art

If your taste is high art over race cars then you are mere steps away from the world-famous Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). With 100,000 objects dating from ancient times to the present, LACMA is the largest art museum in the western United States. LACMA’s seven-building complex is home to collections drawn from the wide geographic world, encompassing virtually the entire history of art. Among the museum’s special strengths are its holdings of Asian art, housed in part in the Bruce Goff-designed Pavilion for Japanese Art. You’ll also find Latin American art, ranging from pre-Columbian masterpieces to works by leading modern and contemporary artists including Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, and José Clemente Orozco. Additionally, LACMA hosts a spectacular and significant collection of Islamic art.

See Movie Magic at Paramount Pictures Studios

Adjacent to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Paramount Studios has been making movies and showcasing big-name talents since 1910. Some include Judy Garland, Lucille Ball, Morgan Freeman, and Meryl Streep who filmed blockbusters like Titanic. Enjoy the two-hour guided studio tour that takes you around 65 acres in a golf cart; you’ll also get to visit studio sets from numerous movies and TV shows. Various tours have different age restrictions so it’s best to call for current information.

Visit the Grove

As evening falls and you’re ready for a nice candlelit dinner, hop the bus back north on Fairfax toward the Farmers Market. Behind this, you’ll find the newer, swankier extravaganza that is the Grove Los Angeles. This theme park-like world hosts fountains, colorful shops, and even a fun little tram ride. Most of all this is a place to be at nightfall, where you can choose from a selection of restaurant patios and watch the world go by. If you’re not too tired — and given that this is L.A., the land of movie-make-believe — why not catch the latest blockbuster at Pacific’s Grove Stadium 14? After all, when in Rome…

Pay Your Respects at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery

For all the celebrities roaming around LA, your only guarantee of actually spotting one is at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Some of the biggest stars that ever worked at Paramount Pictures Studios rest here and maps are available detailing the celebrities’ final resting places. Most visitors describe the grounds as peaceful, serene, and well-kept with a knowledgeable and helpful staff. Note that the cemetery is located on Santa Monica Boulevard in the heart of Hollywood and parking can be tough in the area, but can be booked in advance online.
