Five webcams have been installed on Lady Liberty’s torch and will go live Friday during a one-on-a-kind birthday celebration. New York City will mark the occasion with a naturalization ceremony for 125 future citizens from over 40 different countries. Before the end of the ceremony, the cams will be switched on, proving a global audience with a few never-before-seen views, including a stunning panorama of the Manhattan skyline. The webcams were donated to the National Parks Service by Earthcam Inc., a New Jersey-based company that specializes in providing live internet feeds from around the world. Following the birthday celebration, the interior of the statue will begin extensive renovations. While visitors arriving on flights to New York City will still be welcome at Liberty Island, the statue itself will be closed to the public for up to one year as stairwells and elevators are upgraded.
