Xiamen is a city in the Fjian Province located on the southeast coast of China. As thousands of ergets are found here, the city is also known as Egret Island. Xiamen is a great tourist destination as it offers several sightseeing opportunities for travelers. The city is full of mountains, temples, parks and more. Some of the famous tourist attractions in this coastal city include South Putuo Temple and Gulangyu Island. South Putuo TempleThe South Putuo Temple is a Buddhist temple located facing the sea at the foot of Wulaofeng (Mountain of Five Old Men). Anyone traveling to the city must include the temple in his itinerary. The area in and around the temple offers scenic views. The temple was once known as Puzhao Temple (Universal Grace Temple) and was constructed during the reign of the Tang Dynasty (618-907). Nearly 30,000 square meters of area is covered by the temple and it comprises around four main buildings; Devajara Hall (the Hall of Heavenly Kings), Mahavira Hall (Daxiongbaodian), Dabei Hall (the Hall of Great Compassion) and a Pavilion.
Gulangyu IslandLocated towards the southwest of the Xiamen city is the Gulangyu Island. The island can be reached in 5 minutes from Xiamen city via steamship. Gulangyu Island has been registered under China's list of National Scenic Spots. It is renowned for its ancient relics, natural beauty, and architecture. Gulangyu Island has derived its name from the vast reef surrounding the area. There are numerous scenic sights on the island. Some of the major attractions here include Sunlight Rock in the south-central part of the island and Shuzhuang Garden located on the southern side of the island.
Hulishan Battery (Scenic Spot)On the south of the Xiamen is located Hulishan Battery, a scenic spot. The spot covers an area of around 17 acres and comprises a tunnel, barracks, fortified buildings, and a magazine. All these are surrounded by a granite wall. The ground of the battery is made from a mixture of ash, mud, and sand with glutinous rice and brown sugar. The construction of the battery began in the year 1894 (during Qing Dynasty) and ended during 1896. Located in its premises is the Rongguang Museum where one can see ancient firecrackers, swords, guns, and various unusual natural stones from various parts of the world. Displayed here is the smallest cannon of the world (made by Portuguese during 13th century).
