Places of Interest in VadodaraLocated on the banks of the River Vishwamitri is the Cultural Capital of Gujarat, Vadodara (earlier known as Baroda). It is the third largest city in the State of Gujarat, India. Vadodara is well known for housing the residence of Maratha royal family (the Gaekwads) - the Lakshmi Vilas Palace. This city is a significant cultural, industrial, and educational hub in western India. Located here is the largest university of Gujarat, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. Some of the major industries here include petrochemicals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, foreign exchange, and more. Some of the lovely attractions muyst visit here include - The Vadodara Museum, the Maharaja Fateh Singh Museum, the Nandlal Bose murals of the Bhagvad Gita, and the Tambekar Wada Haveli.
The Vadodara Museum and Picture Gallery was constructed in the year 1894. Designed by Mant and Chisholm, the museum was established on the orders Sayajirao. Sayajirao himself traveled and dealt with numerous dealers and scholars to setup a wide range of collection starting from Mughal miniatures, textiles, sculptures to objects from Tibet, Japan, Egypt, and Nepal. Housed in the museum are the exhibits related to Natural History, Earth Science, and Zoology. One can learn about the tribes of Gujarat - Gamits, Bhils, Rabaris, Wagharis, and Chaudhuris, through the Ethnography section. The library here holds nearly 23,000 books and periodicals on variety of subjects.
Kadia Dungar CavesThe Kadia Dungar Caves located near Bharuch, Vadodara are one of the several popular tourist attractions. The most remarkable feature of these caves is the monolithic lion pillars. Through the shapes of these caves it is evident that during early 1st and 2nd century AD, the caves were used as monasteries or viharas. The religious aura here not only attracts Buddhist but people from all religions. On the foothills near the Kadia Dungar Caves is a Brick Stupa, which too is said to exists from the same era.
Sursagar TalavLocated in the downtown Vadodara is the Sursagar Talav, an artificial manmade lake. Since its constructed during 19th century, the lake has been attracting numerous tourists. Established during the rule of the Gaikwad family, Sursagar Talav is the largest manmade lake in Vadodara. It has been constructed in such a manner that it serves the mechanism of preventing water flooding. There are gates in the lake which if opened the water of the lake flows to the Vishwamitra River in its proximity. At present it is a favorite picnic spot amongst people.
