One of the most picturesque groups of islands in Micronesia, Chuuk is made up of 11 high islands on and around the lagoon's fringing coral reef and 24 atolls and low islands that lie outside the lagoon. It was once the bulwark of Imperial Japanese Navy but was bombed and devastated by Allied Forces during the Second World War. Consequently, it is now a deathbed of an entire fleet of Japanese naval warships that now reside at its bottom. Spending a few hours wreck diving or snorkeling here would offer you a vivid snapshot of the fateful day that bombardment had taken place. Next up, you can use the unmarked hikes here or climb up to the Octopus Mountain to get a panoramic view of Weno and Pou Bays. A more tangible part of Japanese naval might can also be derived from a mid-20th century lighthouse in Sapuk and it this abandoned artifact sits royally over a hill in the nearby jungle.

Rated one of the world’s four ‘Meccas of Wreck Diving’ by PADI Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving, Chuuk is home to a ghostly seabed consisting of an entire fleet of Imperial Japanese Navy that had met its Waterloo due to relentless bombing by Allied Powers in 1944. Once you dive-in here, you would see the 70 year old wrecked shipwrecks being royally encased in a timeless case of the island’s reef system, well protected from deep sea currents. The wreckage site called Fujikawa Maru. It was a passenger ship built by Mitsubishi Company in 1938 and its wreck is rated as one of the top 10 wreck dives in the world.
