Theres so much to do in Sydney that youll likely want to extend your vacation by a week at least. Australias most populous and cosmopolitan city simply brims with energy, especially during the summer (which coincides with North Americas winter), when locals and tourists alike flock to the Harbour and its many beaches to take advantage of the sun and sea. Sydney also offers wildlife aplenty: Just venture a few miles outside the city and youll spot colorful lizards and fuzzy wallabies out on the trail. And if all that activity leaves you feeling a bit drained, remember that Australians take their coffee very seriously, with a prevalent and varied cafe culture; dont miss out on an exquisite cup of the local roast.
Sydney Harbour
The number one attraction in Sydney is undoubtedly its harbour, the sparkling jewel of the continents preeminent city. Theres so much to see just by strolling around, including the iconic Opera House and the massive Harbour Bridge. Numerous ferries are available to take visitors around the waters to check out the scenery.
Manly Beach
When in Sydney during the warmer seasons, theres no way to escape taking a jaunt to the beach. Manly beach is a gorgeous strip of sand located among Sydneys Northern Beaches. Accessible by public ferry, the beach comprises a Manly Scenic Walkway, numerous restaurants and bars, plus plenty of waves for surfers.
Art Gallery of New South Wales
Sydneys premier art house has been open since 1874 and offers free general admission. The Art Gallery of NSW, as its called, houses three permanent collections of Australian, European and Asian art, and plays host to many other touring exhibits. Its Art After Hours series features lectures, previews and more.
Meat Pies
Meat pies have variations in many different cultures, but youll be one step closer to earning your true Aussie badge after having a few of Sydneys best. These pies should comprise a flaky, buttery pastry filled with tender, mouthwateringly flavorful meat, always served piping hot with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy.Lamingtons
A lamington, often described as the national cake of Australia, is a cube of sponge cake traditionally coated in chocolate sauce and drizzled with dessicated coconut, and sometimes filled with a layer of cream or jam. These bite-sized treats are a great snack; the cake should be light and springy with the perfect amount of moisture.
Native Animals
Creatures like kangaroos, crocodiles and emus arent just for scoping out in zoos here, they grace restaurant menus. Dont let the exotic factor keep you from having a taste: You can get them char-grilled, on pizza, as tartare and more. Emu and kangaroo meat in general is low in fat and high in nutrients.
Cafe Sydney
If you cant get enough of the Sydney Harbour views, take a seat at Cafe Sydney, where youll catch an eyeful of the Harbour Bridge along with your fresh seafood. Sitting atop the historic Customs House, the restaurant and bar features high quality cocktails and an extensive selection of wines to suit the palate.
Sydney Opera House
Rising out of Sydney Harbour like a clutch of glowing white clamshells, the Sydney Opera House is just as glamorous inside as it is on the outside. Visitors can take tours backstage, cozy up to the theatre bars, and of course, watch all kinds of performances in the Opera Houses handful of venues.
The Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel
Vying for the title of oldest pub in the city, the Lord Nelson Brewery Hotel has certainly withstood the test of time. Established in 1841, the Hotel operates its own brewery, churning out two varieties of bottled ales and a handful of others on tap. The beers are said to be crisp, super-fresh and all-natural.
