How many world cities do you know of that have perfectly played their part in shaping their respective mother nation’s historical, ethnic and martial identity? We know of one such place. It is called Shenyang, it is the largest city in northeast China and the capital of Liaoning Province. It is home to 38 out of 56 ethnic groups in the country and a cumulative effect of the same is evident in the city’s architecture and culinary arts alike. It was in Shenyang that the Imperial Japanese Army had defeated Imperial Russia’s Red Army in 1905 and Chinese Army in 1931. Once through with this Japanese mad max onslaught, Shenyang rapidly started to transform itself into a major industrial and martial behemoth during the 20th century. It has now graduated to host the headquarters of the People's Liberation Army's Northern Theater Command and some garrisons its Air Force besides being an important industrial center in the country. A shopping spree in Middle Street would come highly recommended to all the visitors here. It is a hundred year old market and ranks among top 10 shopping streets in China.
The Shenyang Imperial Palace was built to resemble Beijing’s super classic palace Forbidden City in 1625 AD. It was the former imperial palace of the early Manchu-led Qing dynasty and retained this coveted distinction until 1644 AD. Once the Imperial rule collapsed, the palace was converted into a museum with an extensive display of many ancient cultural relics, artworks, calligraphy, pottery and sculptures.
Zhaoling (or Zhao Mausoleum)One of the only three imperial tombs north of the Great Wall of China, Zhaoling was meticulously built as a synchronous signature of Manchu and Chinese architecture over a period of eight years during 1643 to 1651 AD. It is dedicated to the second Qing emperor Huang Taiji and is set across a stunning backdrop of large areas of forest and several lakes. Of related interest here is the Fuling Tomb or East Mausoleum. It is where the Nu'erhachi, the founder of Qing Dynasty, is laid to rest. This tomb was built in early 17th century and is constructed in line with traditional Manchu style with inputs from Chinese Feng Shui.
9.18 Memorial Museum. It was at 22:30 hrs on 18 September 1931 when a bomb exploded beside a railway line near Shenyang. This insolence incensed the Japanese who were running the railway station there, and soon enough invaded and mercilessly subjugated the city. This museum unflinchingly displays the atrocities of that invasion through a number of photographs to yield a spine-chilling account of what had happened during the mayhem.
