Richland is what connects the dots between Second World War, Nagasaki and an atom bomb. This riverside city along Columbia River in Washington was only a farming settlement until it was expanded to build an atom bomb that nearly wiped out the Japanese city (and along with it, the might of Imperial Japanese Army) from the face of earth in Second World War. Post that mayhem, the city has went along to become a major wine-producing area and a hotspot of beautiful riverside parks that offer boating, water skiing, fishing, kayaking and waterfowl hunting opportunities for the outdoor enthusiasts.
Places of Interest in RichmondHanford Reach National Monument is home to nine nuclear reactors, none more famous than the world’s first full scale reactor called the B Reactor. Plutonium synthesized from this reactor was used to make the atom bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki on 8 August 1945 during the Second World War. The monument is named after the Hanford Reach, and is the last non-tidal and free-flowing section of the Columbia River in the US. It is now home to 48 rare or endangered animal species besides some insect species that are not found anywhere else in the world.
The Columbia River Exhibition of History, Science, and Technology is a museum and science center in Richland that offers an insight into the profound geological and historical relevance of the Columbia Basin. You would be particularly impressed by its dedicated displays related to the Hanford Site and the way it completely transformed Richland during the World War and Cold War.
Badger Mountain Centennial PreserveThe Badger Mountain Centennial Preserve is an alpha place to hike to Badger Mountain near the city. Quantitatively speaking, this translates to 984 feet above the ground through a 1.2 mile long stretch that awards a hiker with a spectacular cityscape of Washington’s Tri-Cities (Richland, Kennewick and Pasco) along with the Columbia and Yakima rivers.
