Pretoria is a city in the northern part of Gauteng Province, South Africa. It was founded in 1855 AD and has since then evolved to become one of the country's three capital cities, the seat of the executive branch of government, the centre of South Africa's military and an epicenter of cultural and architectural diversity. This city is quick to spoil a visitor for choices with its superb bouquet of 19th century Dutch and British Colonial, Neo-modern and Art-Deco architectural structures, albeit with a characteristic South African tinge. An ideal day here would start with a trip inside the country's oldest and leading natural history museum- Transvaal Museum to see its breathtaking display of its 5 million year old fossils.
Places of Interest in PretoriaThe Voortrekker Monument in Pretoria is a massive granite structure located on a hilltop to commemorate the Voortrekkers tribe who left the Cape Colony between 1835 and 1854. It is home to the world’s biggest frieze that lies in a massive space flanked by four huge arched yellow Belgian glass windows. Another attraction here is the Cenotaph whose centre bears the inscription 'Ons vir Jou, Suid-Afrika' (Afrikaans: 'We for Thee, South Africa') and is spectacularly illuminated by sunlight at 12 o’clock on 16th December every year.
The Wonderboom Nature Reserve in Pretoria is home to a 1000 year old tree called Wonderboom and South Africa’s single largest accumulation of Neolithic tools. The former is a dense grove highlighted by a nearly 25 meter high tree that has 13 trunks and measures 55 metres around itself. Common folklore believe that beneath its roots are buried the final remains of a native tribal chieftain, and that accounts for the tree’s superfluous dimensions.
Pretoria National Botanic GardenPretoria National Botanic Garden is one of South Africa's nine National Botanical Gardens. It is segregated into western, central and eastern sections. The western part is a colorful display of wetlands, succulent garden and medicinal garden flanked by a concert stage, tea garden and an artificial waterfall. Central part supports the National Herbarium, Biodiversity Center and Environmental Education Center. The eastern side contains an arboretum, natural grassland and a walking trail along the central ridge.
