Places of Interest in Misawa
The city of Misawa is located on the southern shore of Lake Ogawara, Aomori, Japan. The area surrounding the city is rural yet scenic. Though Misawa lacks excitements of a major city but its friendly atmosphere and country settings are quite attractive. The capital of Japan, Tokyo can be reached from here in an hour via air, three and a half hour via train, and in around 1-12 hours through driving. Several tours are held in the city, which are conducted by Misawa ITT. The group travels all over Japan and other parts of Asia as well and will be glad to take anyone along. Summers in Misawa are quite suitable for camping, fishing, hiking, and other leisure activities. During winters, one can enjoy skiing, ice skating, and sledding.
Misawa Aviation and Space Museum
A visit to the Misawa Aviation and Space Museum is must during your stay in Misawa. Bring along your kids as they will thoroughly enjoy the Childrens Square, the Science Zone, and the Aviation Zone. Here is the static display of aircrafts, educational gimmicks and training aids, simulators, and rides. Located here is a library and a theater where a 5 minute show is held. On a clear day, one can also explore the outdoor terrace and the park of the museum. The museum staff is fluent in English!
Asamush Aquarium
Located around 15 minutes drive from the air base, the Asamush Aquarium is one of the best indoor facilities in Misawa. It is home to uncountable species of fishes, aquatic birds, and mammals from almost every part of the earth. Here is a version of petting zoo known as "Touch and Discover Zone." One should definitely take some time out to touch various sea species including starfish and sea urchins.
Lake Towada
Situated within the Towada-Hachimantai National Park, Lake Towada was formed in the crater of an extinct volcano and covers 59.8 square kilometers. The depth of the lake is nearly 172 feet, making it the third deepest lake in Japan. Thousands of visitors are attracted here as the lake is surrounded by hills which are covered by trees. These hills are part of the Hakkoda Mountain chain. Campgrounds and hotels are located here for the visitors, who wish to stay for a day or two.
