Visit Kansas City, Missouri

Kansas City is bisected by the Missouri River, meaning half its metropolitan area lies in Missouri while the other half is in Kansas. If thats too confusing for you, just remember that the Missouri side is the states biggest city and thus where youll find the most to do. One KC specialty you cant miss is its barbecue, of which youll find tons in addition to great Vietnamese food and new takes on American cuisine. Far from plain, Kansas City is decorated with hundreds of fountains, hence its nickname City of Fountains. These days, the city features an exciting mix of old and new: Modern speakeasies and progressive chef-owned restaurants are cropping up amid the old-school jazz clubs and BBQ joints.

KC Fountains

Kansas City is often referred to as the City of Fountains, and for good reason: There are at least 2 registered fountains in the metropolitan area, many of which are adorned with gorgeous sculptures. You can take a self-guided tour throughout the city or charter a horse-drawn carriage to explore the 32 fountains downtown.

Kauffman Stadium

Home to the Kansas City Royals, Kauffman Stadium is celebrated for being one of the oldest ballparks in the nation as well as opposing the trend of multi-purpose sports arenas this is a place for baseball only. The stadium also has a colorful tailgating tradition, so BYOB and make some new friends in the parking lot.

National World War I Museum

Travel back in time at National World War I Museum, which contains the biggest collection of WWI artifacts. Youll see cannons, medals, uniforms, statues, photographs and much more. Right outside the museum stands the imposing, 265-foot Liberty Memorial, dedicated to the service men and women of WWI.

Brisket

Making top-notch brisket requires precision, and when done well, the smoky flavor almost precludes the meat from needing any sauce at all. Dig into the hefty brisket sandwiches at Joes Kansas City Bar-B-Que or LCs Bar-B-Q to find out what smoked barbecue should taste like.

Ribs

Take your pick of meat: Be it lamb, beef or pork, youll find it served up tender and practically falling off the bone. Get in line at Arthur Bryants or Fiorellas Jack Stack Barbecue and youll no doubt be licking the sauce off your fingers by the end of your gut-busting meal.

Burnt Ends

Its easy to write off burnt ends as the bottom of the barbecue totem pole; its not so easy to make them properly, but theyre pretty much a delicacy in KC. Burnt ends are the briskets fatty ends that get smoked twice for maximum crispness on the outside with a juicy interior.

Flying Saucer Draught Emporium

Since opening in 28, this Texas-based chain has quickly risen to the top of the Kansas City brewery scene. Flying Saucer has a near-unrivaled beer selection, with more than 5 on tap and an equally extensive range of bottles. Plus, theres a tasty pub menu and fun events and specials every day of the week.

Kauffman Center for Performing Arts
