It is outright impossible to think of the word ‘Hiroshima’ and not think of an atom bomb and the mayhem that followed it. This was the first instance of nuclear warfare out of two in total in the Second World War, and had accounted for a gruesome death of nearly 70000 people instantly. Since that horrible day of 6th August 1945, this capital city of its eponymous province on Honshu Island has moved on with dignity and courage to emerge as one of the most significant epicenters of Japanese historical, cultural and commercial identities. This memorial is situated at the very place where this bomb was dropped and includes several themed monuments and museums, central to them being the Atom Bomb Dome. This iconic structure houses the ruins of the Hiroshima Prefectural Commercial Exhibition that was situated 160 meters from where bomb was dropped.
The Hiroshima Peace Memorial MuseumThe Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, focuses on what happened on and after the world’s first atom bomb was dropped on the city. The museum’s East Wing elucidates the chronological order of events leading to the dropping of bomb and the way this event changed the face of the city forever and the West Wings is dedicated to clothes, watches, hair and other personal collectibles of the victims plus a section detailing the horrific aftereffects on the health of the surviving inhabitants. A peace education program also plays a spine-chilling testimony of a bomb survivor.
Hiroshima CastleThe present day architectural beauty called Hiroshima Castle stands over the 16th century Carp Castle that was built by a warlord even before the city was settled. It was destroyed in the nuclear bombing and was reconstructed in 1958 to house a five storey castle plus an attractive reconstruction of the original tower. Also of note here are three trees that had survived the atomic bombing and are within the perimeters of the castle. This castle is a riot of sights and sounds during cherry blossom parties called Hanami.
