Harare is Zimbabwe’s capital and one of the most cosmopolitan national capital cities in the African continent. This city has risen above its turbulent past to emerge as the country’s leading financial and commercial centre that charms its visitors through an open bracket of cultural, historical and architectural offerings. Harare is home to an array of historical monuments alongside some modern skyscrapers, and also to some museums, art galleries, nature reserves and resorts. An impossible to miss attraction here is a collection of stone sculptures at Chapungu Kraal and Sculpture Park and an jaw-dropping assembly of naturally balancing rocks at Epworth Balancing Rocks.
National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare is home to a magnificent collection of soft-stone carvings, paintings and other artworks related to Zimbabwe's contemporary art and visual heritage. The museum also offers some educational and cultural programs, besides organizing a program called ‘Artwork of the Week’ where it exclusively showcases an artist’s work every week.
The Zimbabwe Museum of Human SciencesThe Zimbabwe Museum of Human Sciences (formerly the Queen Victoria Museum) in Harare is best known for the oldest wooden object ever found in sub-Saharan Africa- a 700 year old artifact called Ngoma Lungundu. Common folklore believes that the drumlike object is a replica of the legendary Ark of the Covenant and is endowed with near-divine powers. Also of note in the museum are several galleries of ethnographic, archaeological and wildlife exhibits besides a model of an ethnic Zimbabwean village.
National Archives of ZimbabweThe National Archives of Zimbabwe (estd: 1935) is home to a breathtaking collection of artifacts related to the history, geography and cultural heritage of Rhodesia and African continent.
