Farmington is a city in San Juan County in the US state of New Mexico. An integral part of southwest America’s cultural identity and scenic beauty, this city is situated at junction of three rivers (San Juan, Animas and La Plata) on the Colorado Plateau. It should be on the top of your itinerary for its superb bracketed offerings across a number of domains like outdoor recreation, travel, sightseeing, cultural events, historical sites and nature parks. You can also pursue hiking, biking, fishing and geocaching here besides exploring historical sites of Native cultures and the Aztecs.
Places of Interest in FarmingtonAztec Ruins National Monument is situated near the small town of Aztec that lies to the northeast of Farmington. It preserves the remains of an ancient Native American village. It is hallmarked by a short path that runs through the ruins leading to nearly 400 masonry rooms. These structures date back to 11thcentury and were wrongly equated to the Aztec Civilization by some American settlers that had come here in 19th century.
Salmon Ruin is an archaeological site that lies about 10 miles off Farmington and was built during 1088 AD and 1092 AD by the Chaco inhabitants. It was mostly excavated during the 1970s and yielded 1.5 million artifacts that are now kept in Salmon Ruins Museum. Also of note here is a 19th century house called Pioneer Homestead. It was built in 1890 AD and consists of a dugout, bunk house, carriage house and a well.
Bisti Badlands and De-Na Zin WildernessFarmington is home to two superb hiking sites, one lies on the developed trails along Animas River and the other lies on the lesser explored paths on the Bisti Badlands and De-Na Zin Wilderness. The latter is characterized by some breathtaking geological formations that have resulted over last 70 million years due to a once-existing river flow and volcanic sediments. When the water disappeared from the place, it left behind a layer of jumbled sandstones and mudstones to slowly evolve into what is now a famous tourist magnet.
