Also known as the ‘City of Trees,’ the Californian city of Chico is one of world’s richest agricultural areas in the United States. It is home to California State University and has a typical small-town ambiance with a pronounced taste for music and theatrical performances. This mellifluous demeanor is seconded by a proud heritage and a list of few notable firsts. As for example, you may visit the Chico Museum (for its circus exhibit that stands unparalleled in the Western US), the National Yo-Yo Museum (for the country's largest collection of yo-yo artifacts and the world's largest functional yo-yo), the Honey Run Covered Bridge (it is the only covered bridge in the country to have three distinct roof lines) and Bidwell Park (it is the 9th largest municipally-owned park in the country).
Places of Interest in ChicoBidwell Park in Chico is a flora hotspot amidst some picture-perfect beauty spread across in 3670 acres of land. It is divided into Upper Bidwell (with a hilly, rugged terrain) and Lower Bidwell (with a flatter and relenting terrain). This park is an exquisite delight for those interested in a tranquil place amidst native plants and several harmless little animals. A star attraction here is swimming in a 100-year old Sycamore Pool which is bounded by its concrete decks that were actually constructed to contain the waters of Big Chico Creek. Also of note is Cedar Grove which is home to a number of plants that were brought in here from around the world sometime in late 19th century.
Hinging royally between opulence and legacy of former statesman John Bidwell and his wife Annie, Bidwell Mansion State Historic Park is a triple-storied Victorian house built in 1865 AD as a composite signature of Italianate architecture, Italian Villa and Octagon structural styles. It is now embellished as a State Historic Park to include a water fountain, a lobby, a museum store, an exhibit hall and a theater.
National Yo-Yo MuseumThe National Yo-Yo Museum in Chico is home to the world’s largest public display of various types of Yo-Yos that date back to the 1920s. The star attraction here is a huge Yo-Yo weighing 256 pound that had made it to the 1982 Guinness Book of World Records as the ‘World’s Biggest Working Wooden Yo-Yo.’ The city of Chico also organizes a Yo-Yo Contest every year in August since 1993, and an extensive display of related memorabilia and contest awards can be seen here.

My trip was uneventful. Smooth sailing from Phoenix to Dallas then to Detroit to hiccups. Ticketing was easy too. - Reggie Nov 15, 2024
