China’s former national capital, Chengdu is now the provincial capital and largest city of Sichuan Province. It is a prominent axis of the Orient nation’s economy, commerce and culture and is nicknamed ‘the Abundant Land’ because of its fertile soil, favorable climate and the world’s oldest existing irrigation system (Dujiangyan Irrigation System). You should visit this city for its stunning riverside beauty along Jin River and its giant pandas- the latter being one of rarest animal species in the world, and are considered a national treasure in China. You should visit this city especially during the first month of Chinese Lunar Calendar when it hosts Chinese New Year celebrations and the Lantern Festival.
Out of an estimated 1500 pandas that are found in China, 80% are found in Sichuan Province alone. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, in Chengdu, is the world’s only breeding center of pandas (and some other rare animal species) that is located in a metropolitan city. It is home to about 60 giant pandas besides some red pandas and a colony of black-necked cranes.

Du Fu Thatched CottageConsidered China’s answer to Shakespeare, Du Fu (712-770 AD) was a gifted poet who lived during the Tang Dynasty in China. He had moved to Chengdu and built a thatched hut as his residence in 759 AD, and this is where he wrote some of his masterpieces over a period of four years. His former house has now been turned into a 24-acre park and museum that sits amidst a picture-perfect backdrop of trees, bridges, pathways and a stream.
