Much unlike its literal meaning of ‘a place to slaughter’, Bulawayo is a now relaxed and elegant Zimbabwean city that offers a contrasting perspective of national history and architecture. It was settled in 1840 and has been an epicenter of some of the most significant events that have shaped the national history, including Colonization by the British in 1860s. This city is a closed bracket of a relaxed and laid back ambiance that integrates its sedate tri-pronged offerings in history, architecture and scenic beauty- and its 20th Colonial architecture is one of those signatures. Star attractions in Bulawayo include the Matobo Hills National Park (it has a stunning landscape and about 2000 year old bushman cave paintings), the Natural History Museum, the Train Museum and the National Art Gallery.
The Matobo National Park is located in the Matobo Hills, an area of small granite hills and wooded valleys at about half an hour’s drive from Bulawayo. This park is home to hills that were made of granite 2 billion year old. It a hotbed of flora and fauna, and that it consists of over 200 species of trees, 100 species of grass, 175 species of birds, 88 species of mammals, 39 species of snakes and 16 species of fish.
Bulawayo Railway Museum or the Train MuseumBulawayo Railway Museum is a railway station in Bulawayo that offers a snapshot of the times when the national railways was taking baby steps in late 19th century. Some of the star attractions here are a personal railway coach of the former Prime Minister of Cape Colony- Cecil Rhodes, and some old steam and diesel engines from 1917-55 AD.
The Natural History Museum of ZimbabweOpened in 1964, the Natural History Museum of Zimbabwe in Bulawayo is the largest museum in the country. It has a series of extensive displays related to the history, precious stones, wildlife and prehistoric life forms in the country. Central to all awe here is the world’s second largest elephant that was once and shot and stuffed, and is placed at the entrance to the museum.
