Bishkek is the capital and financial axis of Kyrgyz Republic. Situated across a mountainous landscape of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too Mountains, this city has come a long way from its embryonic state of a 19th century clay fortress to a home of a pronounced degree of Soviet-era architecture and gardens . You should visit this city to see how beautifully it has captured the essence of its 2 year old history through a magnificent line-up of monuments and cultural institutions. Of special note here are a railway station built in 1946 by the German Prisoners of War and the National Historical Museum. Located at a 3 minutes ride from the city is a popular year round destination for weekend picnickers, hikers, skiers and mountain climbers known as Ala Archa National Park.
Places of Interest in Bishkek Ala-Too Square is the central square in Bishkek. It was built in 1984 to celebrate the 6th anniversary of the Kyrgyz SSR. It is centrally hallmarked by a bronze statue of the cult hero Manas and the People's Friendship Monument, the latter being home to an independence monument where an official change of guards takes place every two hours. This iconic square is at its royal best during festivities and public gatherings.
State Historical Museum The nearly 1 year old State Historical Museum is one of the largest museums in Central Asia. It houses 9 million objects of museum value, central to which is an enthralling collection of archaeological and ethnographic artifacts like traditional Kyrgyz embroidery and jewelry etc. Also of note are several documents, photographs, paintings and sculptures that date back to Soviet era.
The Ala Archa National Park The Ala Archa National Park is an alpine national park in the Tian Shan Mountains and is located less than 25 miles from Bishkek. A year round destination for adventure sports, the park is a glorious sum of a gorge (of the Ala-Archa River), a stunning mountainous backdrop, waterfalls, springs, 2 glaciers and nearly 5 mountain peaks that comes to life during the Alpinada Festival in May.
