La Fortaleza (Spanish for ‘The Fortress’)
Built between 1533 and 1540, La Fortaleza is a former defensive superstructure and the present official residence of the Governor of Puerto Rico. The oldest mansion in the Americas, it was built to defend the harbor of San Juan from seafaring aggressors.
Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Castillo San Felipe del Morro a nearly 500-year-old citadel in San Juan. It is named in honor of King Philip II of Spain (1556-98 AD). It was built to serve a two-fold purpose- first, to defend the port city from hostile naval forces and second, to guard the entrance the entry to the city.
Castillo San Cristobal (or Fort San Cristobal)
Finished in 1783, Fort San Cristobal is the largest fortification built by the Spanish in the Americas. It is spread across almost 27 acres of land and acts as a bulwark around the city. A third of it was later demolished in 1897 to facilitate the flow of city’s traffic.
