The Carnival
The Carnival is a popular Dominican celebration that is celebrated amidst an electrifying atmosphere of music, dance and parades throughout February. The event is at its superlative best on the Dominican Independence Day, February 27th and involves a large military parade of the country’s army, air force and navy.
Merengue Festival
Celebrated between July 26 and 31, the Merengue Festival is a celebration of Dominican Republic’s chief dance style, Merengue. The festival involves top Merengue artists and bands who perform in free concerts to the common public. This event also involves a parade, many art exhibitions, food fairs, and games.
El Altar de la Patria (or The Altar of the Homeland)
The Altar of the Homeland is a white marble mausoleum in Santo Domingo that houses the remains of the Founding Fathers of the Dominican Republic. It also features their statues and an ‘eternal flame’ that is kept lit in honour of their contributions to the nation.
