Many people wait a lifetime to visit the “City of Love.” If you plan on visiting Paris, France in the near future, here's what you need to know before you venture out on the trip of a lifetime.
Today, the City of Love is a flourishing place where tourism is booming. There are so many things to do, one would have to live in the city for many years just to see it all. While that’s not possible for most people, a trip to Paris can give you a wonderful sense of the beauty and culture that engulfs this city. Here is a list of just some of the must-see features you should check out on your trip to one of the most romantic cities in the world.
Eiffel Tower There are very few people who don’t picture the Eiffel Tower when they think about Paris. This iconic structure was designed and built in 1889 for the World’s Fair, and today it is one of the world’s most recognizable structures. At night the girders are illuminated with sparkling lights, and by day travelers from every corner of the world fill the Champ de Mars to pose for photos in front of the tower, which is one of the most magnificent sites in Europe.
Musee du Louvre If you only have time to visit one museum while you’re in Paris, it should be this one. The Louvre is widely considered to be the world's greatest art museum, and it features more than 675,000 square feet of gallery space. You can discover works of art from civilizations around the world, as well as timeless classics of Western art such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. Since its opening in 1793, the museum has grown to include more than 35,000 works of art from different time periods. You can see everything from ancient Greek sculptures to Egyptian sarcophagi.
Notre Dame Cathedral This cathedral is another iconic feature of Paris. It is located along the River Seine, and is considered to be a Gothic masterpiece. Construction started in the late 10th century, and the final touches weren’t completed until almost 200 years after. The architectural details are incredible, and the view of the city captured from the square in front is unequaled.
While you’re in Paris, you need to be able to get around the city so you can take in all the sights you possibly can. There are a few ways you can get around, and what you choose may depend on your plans for the day and your preferences.
The Metro The Metro is probably the quickest way to get around Paris. The Paris Metro is one of the oldest subway systems in the world, but it is still one of the best. The trains run from 5:00 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. every day, and the price of one ticket gets you as far as you want to go. If you want to plan your itinerary ahead of time, you can view train and bus maps at the Paris Metro website.
On Foot If you plan to walk around the City of Love, you won’t be the only one. Walking is very popular in Paris. Traveling by foot is actually one of the best ways you can discover the city. You can even download a maps app on your phone so you don’t get lost.
By Taxi Taxis in Paris are unlike taxis in other major cities. You have to find a taxi stand in order to use one.. Even if you find a stand, there is no guarantee that you will find a cab that is ready for you. You can, however, book a taxi in advance so you don’t have to wait.
