Explore Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad (also known as Amdavad) is the largest city and former capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. Founded as Karnavati in 11th century, this culturally and architecturally affluent riverside city along Sabarmati River is a tourist magnet for its vibrant festivals and predominantly sweet cuisines. The Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi had also lived here in Sabarmati Ashram and had launched his non-cooperation movement Dandi March in 1930. With regards to sightseeing options, Ahmedabad can spoil you for choices rather quickly with its historical monuments like Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj Stepwell and Jama Mosque and Indo-Saracenic styled monuments like Sidi Saiyyed Mosque and Bhadra Fort. Ahmadabad’s profound cultural dynamism is evident in festivals like Uttarayan, Navratri and popular folk dance of Gujarat - the Garba.
Things to do in Ahmedabad
Sabarmati Ashram (or Gandhi Ashram or Satyagrah Ashram)
Sabarmati Ashram is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati in Ahmedabad. Common folklore assumes that it is located on a former site where an ancient Indian saint, Dadhichi Rishi had donated his bones to the Gods. This ashram was one of the residences of the Father of the Nation, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi for nearly 12 years. It was also the launching pad for Gandhi’s famous Dandi March in 1930 that later went on to play a crucial role in India’s independence. Visitors can find a museum called the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya here that is home to several thousand letters written to and by Gandhi, and his personal belongings.Adalaj Stepwell
Adalaj Stepwell is a late 15th century classic piece of Gujarati architecture located in the village of Adalaj, some distance away from Ahmedabad. Its construction was started by king Rana Veer Singh and completed by his wife Queen Roopba in 1498. The five story stepwell bears ornate designing and some intricate carvings in Sanskrit language depicting the exact date and time when it was built.
Jama Masjid
Jama Masjid (also known as Jami or Jumma Mosque) is a famous mosque in Ahmedabad. Built in 1424 AD as per inscription on one of its walls, this glorious yellow sandstone superstructure stands in the center of a large rectangular courtyard. This mosque was originally constructed for the use of king and his family.
Best Time to fly to Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad experiences very hot and dry summers and mild chilly winters every year. It is thus best to visit it during winter season from November to February when the city is much cooler between 28 and 32 deg C. This is the optimum temperature for sightseeing and enjoying cultural festivals. Budget travelers can choose to fly here during summer season between March & June. This time of the year is characterized by blistering heat with temperatures surging beyond 40 deg C and almost zero rainfall, a combination that yields fewer tourists plus cheaper flight and accommodations.
