After you book cheap flights from Philadelphia to Milan -- arguably, one of the most exciting and fashion-forward cities in all of Italy -- you’ll most likely arrive at the Milan-Malpensa Airport. This international, two-terminal hub has a wide variety of shops and restaurants to enjoy, but you’ll probably want to head straight into the city. To get there, you’ll likely take a bus or train to get to your hotel. On your way, you’ll be able to take in some of the breathtaking views that this captivating metropolis has to offer. Although this European epicenter is steeped in history, Milan also has a modern sophistication that’s unrivaled by any other destination on the continent. Students of the world and lovers of fashion alike will instantly fall in love with the sights and sounds of Milan.
If you are searching for PHL to MIL Flights, keep in mind that MIL flights may not necesarily land at the Milan Malpensa Airport. While the Milan-Malpensa Airport is the main international airport in Milan, its airport code is actually MXP. The airport code MIL is a metro code, which refers to all airports in the Milan metro area. When you are looking for cheap flights from PHL to Milan, there are actually three airports to consider.
Most air traffic does arrive at the Milan Malpensa Airport; however, budget airlines, domestic flights, and short-haul international flights often fly through Linate Airport (LIN). The Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), which is also located near the city, is a hub for European budget airlines.
When you are planning your Milan itinerary, you are spoiled for choice. It helps, of course, that there are so many things to do during your visit to Milan. Be sure to make time to appreciate the stunning architecture, like the Duomo di Milano -- an incredible, 600-year-old Gothic cathedral -- or the Royal Palace of Milan. You’ll want to make time for some culture, as well, by visiting the Teatro alla Scalla (an 18th Century theater that houses a museum and library, as well as fantastic operas and ballets) and the Santa Maria delle Grazie, at which you’ll find Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”
Granted, you should get to do some shopping, too. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is a must-see; the glass-enclosed shopping center, built in the 19th Century, offers access to luxury brands and classy eateries. Or try the Quadrilatero d’Oro -- four whole streets of pure fashion featuring haute couture and well-known labels.
Looking for something a bit more off the beaten path? Rent a bike and ride along the canals or check out a soccer game at San Siro Stadium. And you can’t forget about the delectable food! Pasta and pizza are all well and good, but be sure to save room for some risotto alla Milanese and some panettone! Top it all off with a night out on the town and a delicious cocktail or glass of wine.
Although you can take a taxi from the airport, many travelers find that their best bets are the train or the bus due to cost. To get around the city, you can choose between the subway (which has four lines), bus (with 80 routes), or tram (a cute and classic option) for your public transport. You may want to buy an unlimited day pass or even a weekly pass for these options if you’re comfortable using them. Even after having your ticket validated, be sure to keep it on you at all times!
For shorter excursions in Milan, you can also take the train. Bike-sharing is a new option that many active travelers enjoy. You can get some exercise and take in the city’s beauty up close. Milan also has several car-sharing systems to choose from, but many people would rather stick to public transportation when possible.
