Explore Denver

Denver makes a great starting place for travelers venturing into the Rockies; those looking for a mountain experience can spend a day driving along the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. But be sure to devote some time to all that the Mile-High City has to offer: Denver is home to numerous museums, galleries and restaurants. Sports fans are drawn to the lights of Coors Field and Sports Authority Field at Mile High, while families can spend hours exploring the Denver Museum of Nature & Science or the Denver Zoo. For a taste of old-time Denver, spend some time in Larimer Square - also a good place to sample some of the city’s cuisine and, of course, beer.

Many travelers see Denver as a jumping-off point for a Rocky Mountain getaway, using the Colorado capital for its airport and nothing else. But those folks are missing out: The Mile-High City offers a mix of urban excitement and natural surroundings that other American cities can only dream of. We are not saying you should pass on the opportunity to hike the Rockies trails or ski their slopes - just that you shouldn’t do so without making reservations at some of Denver’s eclectic eateries, exploring its museums or sampling a few of its famous brews. Working some of these more metropolitan enticements into your vacation will allow you to experience the Denver that locals know and love.

Things to Do in Denver

Denver Center for the Performing Arts

On the south side of Larimer Square is the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, a gigantic cultural center with the Boettcher Concert Hall and the Auditorium Theater with the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. A night out at the Center for Performing Arts could mean seeing a Broadway Show, enjoying a play, or a variety of other entertainment. This venue hosts all kinds of major events. It is home to the Denver Center Theater Company, the Denver Center Attractions, and the Denver Center Theatre Academy. The center also functions as an educational facility as well, with acting classes and programs, as well as professional development opportunities.

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheater

With excellent views of the Rocky Mountains, miles of hiking trails and cinnamon-hued sandstone cliffs, Red Rocks Park draws many an outdoorsy traveler. Occupying nearly 900 acres, this impressive park offers visitors the opportunity to experience the fascinating geographic transition between the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. If you only have a short amount of time here, stretch your legs along the Trading Post Trail; this 1.4-mile- long path weaves through the rust-colored buttes, making for some spectacular scenery. Before you head out, travelers recommend stopping by the visitor’s center, which features information on the parks history and trails, as well as some examples of fossils found in the area.

Denver Art Museum

The massive, fortress-like Denver Art Museum has a vast collection which includes American Indian, African, European, Asian, and Oceanic Art. Collections also include Spanish colonial and pre-Columbian works. The remodeled American Indian galleries are particularly impressive, covering a broad range of cultures and tribes from the United States and Canada. This extensive collection has gained a reputation

throughout North America, with pieces that span 2,000 years of history. Also, of note is the museum’s African art collection. The modern and contemporary art collection features both well-known names and emerging talent in a variety of media. There is also a separate gallery dedicated to photography. The Denver Art Museum began in a building which is now known as the North Building, designed by Italian

Architect Gio Ponti and opened in 1971. In 2006 the 146,000-square-foot Hamilton Building, an expansion designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, was opened to the public. The new building captured attention with its unique design, inspired by the peaks of the Rocky Mountains.
