Explore Hyderabad
Hyderabad is the state capital of Telangana in southern India. This 400-year city checks both boxes of being a major hub of Information Technology of the country besides being home to a proud historical and architectural heritage. It leaves its visitors spellbound with its architectural offerings, the Golconda Fort and the iconic Charminar. The former was a diamond-trading center and the dynastic capital of Qutb Shahi, while the latter is a 16th-century mosque that is hallmarked by 4 arches that support towering minarets. Hyderabad is also nicknamed as the City of Pearls, the City of Nawabs, the Biryani City and Cyberabad.
Things to Do in Hyderabad
Charminar
Hyderabad’s postcard stamp, the Charminar is a sum of four ornate minarets measuring 48.7 meters and consisting of 140 steps each. This grand architectural superstructure marks the place where the emperor Quli Qutb Shah had prayed for putting an end to a plague epidemic in his kingdom in late 16th century. A unique aspect of Charminar is that it features a mosque inside in the upper storeys and a Hindu temple at the base of one of the minars.
Golkonda
Golkonda (meaning a round hill) or Golla konda (meaning ‘Shepherd’s Hill’) is a citadel and fort situated 11 kilometers away from Hyderabad. It used to serve as the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty (1518–1687 AD) and is home to the mines some world-famous gems like the Koh-i-Noor and the Nassak Diamond. Golkonda is a group of four distinct forts with a 10 km long outer wall and an enclosure leads one to the ‘Fateh Darwaza’ (or the Victory Gate). This gate depicts the triumph of 17th century acoustic engineering because when someone claps at the entrance, the voice reverberates and is audible from almost a kilometer away.
Mecca Masjid
One of the oldest mosques in the city, the Mecca Masjid is fabled to contain a hair of Prophet Mohammad and its central arch is believed to be built of soil and stones brought from the holy Mecca. It was completed as a concerted effort of Qutub Shahi dynasty and the Mughal Empire in 1694. The Mecca Masjid also bears inscriptions of Qu’ran on many of its arches and doors.
