Explore Mumbai

Mumbai (formerly called Bombay) is the capital of the state of Maharashtra and largest city in India. Regarded as the birthplace of Indian cinema, it is also the commercial and financial axis of the country. Mumbai is one of the few metropolises in the world to have a national park inside its borders. This national park is called Borivali National Park, featuring 2400-year old Kanheri Caves.

Things to do in Mumbai

Kanheri Caves

The Kanheri Caves are a series of 109 ancient hillside caves and numerous rock-cut monuments cut from a large basalt rocky structure in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, located a little away from Mumbai. They are home to several invaluable Buddhist sculptures, ancient relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions that date back to 1st century BCE. The caves are divided into two type - the old ones (that are relatively plain and unadorned) and the newer ones (that are decorated and appear more elaborate).

The Gateway of India

Mumbai’s top attraction, the Gateway of India is an arch monument, erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary on their visit to India in 1911. It served to allow entry and access to India. The Gateway of India is a classic example of Indo-Saracenic style with generous inputs from Gujarat’s architecture and other salient features of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. It is flanked by the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Swami Vivekananda.

Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir

Built in 1801, the Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shri Ganesh. It is one of the richest temples in Mumbai and is frequently visited by politicians, movie stars, and others. Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir has a grand statue of Lord Ganesha. The temple’s wooden doors bear carvings of the Ashtavinayak (or the eight manifestations of Ganesha).

Best time to fly to Mumbai

Even though Mumbai is a year round tourist destination, the best times to fly to Mumbai are the autumn and winter seasons that run from October to March. The weather is mild and pleasant at around 33 deg C and humidity is minimum, which is a big factor given that Mumbai is a coastal city. This season peaks in late August and early September with the celebration of the ten day long Ganesh Chaturthi festival in the city.
