Explore Ahmedabad, India

Ahmedabad (also known as Amdavad) is the largest city and former capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. Founded as Karnavati in 11th century, this culturally and architecturally affluent riverside city along Sabarmati River is a tourist magnet for its vibrant festivals and predominantly sweet cuisines. The Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi had also lived here in Sabarmati Ashram and had launched his non-cooperation movement Dandi March in 1930. Some tourist attractions here are Sabarmati Ashram, Adalaj Stepwell, Jama Mosque and Bhadra Fort. The same order of rich cultural dynamism is attached to the cultural festivals like Uttarayan (an annual kite-flying) and Navratri and popular folk dance of Gujarat- the Garba are crowd magnets besides the regular festivals like Deepavali, Rath Yatra and Tajia.

Things to do in Ahmedabad, Gujarat

  1. Sabarmati Ashram (or Gandhi Ashram or Satyagrah Ashram) - Sabarmati Ashram is located on the banks of the River Sabarmati in the Sabarmati suburb of Ahmedabad in Gujarat. It had served as the one of the residences of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi and his wife for nearly 12 years, and was also the launching pad for Gandhi’s famous Dandi March in 1930 that later went on to play a crucial role in India’s independence. The ashram also has a museum, the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya with several thousand letters written to and by Gandhi, and his personal belongings. Common folklore assumes that it is located on a former site of an ancient Indian saint, Dadhichi Rishi who had donated his bones to the Gods.
  2. Jama Masjid - The Jama Masjid (also known as Jami or Jumma Mosque) is a delightful piece of art and artisanship, both inside and outside. It is built with yellow sandstone and stands in the center of a large rectangular courtyard that offers three entrances to the mosque. Originally intended only for the royal family, this mosque is hallmarked by an inscription on one of its walls that says the mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Ahmad Shah I on January 4, 1424.
  3. Sidi Saiyyed Mosque - The Sidi Saiyyed Mosque (also known as Sidi Saiyyid ni Jali in Gujarati language) is a late 16th century marvel known for its exponential religious identity and remarkable architectural identity. It was built in the last year of the existence of Sultanate of Gujarat by Sidi Saiyyid. This mosque is hallmarked by its ten ornate windows that together flaunt latticework (or jalis in Gujarati) on the side and rear arches.

Prague Christmas Markets

My wife, Jessica, and our 19-year-old daughter traveled to Prague from Dec 4–11 and had an incredible experience! They stayed at the Dominican Hotel, a charming and conveniently located spot in the heart of Prague. We booked the trip through CheapOair, bundling the hotel and airfare, and found it to be a great value overall. The booking process was seamless, and all confirmation emails were timely and easy to follow. I was especially impressed with the convenience of using CheapOair—it made setting up the trip straightforward without needing a separate travel agent. Their flights were with TAP Air Portugal, and everything went smoothly. Flights were on time, and the airline provided excellent service. We decided to upgrade to Comfort Seating, which was well worth the extra cost for the added comfort, especially for a longer trip. However, I wish we didn’t have to pay extra to select seats so my wife and daughter could sit together—it would be great if that were included in the base price. CheapOair also provided options for early check-in and travel add-ons through their emails, making planning even easier. For excursions, we used Viator.com to arrange activities directly, which worked perfectly. The trip was well-organized, hassle-free, and a fantastic experience overall. We’ll definitely book through CheapOair again and recommend it to anyone looking for a simple and cost-effective way to plan their travel. Thank you for helping make this trip memorable! - Raleigh  Dec 13, 2024
