Explore Madrid

Madrid is the capital and largest city of Spain. It also doubles up as the capital of the autonomous community of Comunidad de Madrid and a financial powerhouse of the Iberian Peninsula and the Southern Europe. The city is a mirror image of Spain’s profound historical and architectural identity, and it leaves its visitors dazed with its delightful sum of royal palaces, boulevards, parks and art museums. Two star highlights here are the 17th century city square called the Plaza Mayor and one of the biggest European palaces- Royal Palace that stands tall flanked by its Armory. Football runs hot in the city’s veins as it hosts two world-famous football clubs- Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid.

Thing to do in Madrid

Puerta del Sol (Spanish for ‘Gate of the Sun’)

The Puerta del Sol is the central public square and one of the busiest places in Madrid. It doubles up as the centre (also called the Kilómetro Cero or Kilometer Zero) of the country’s radial network from where the national highway system is marked. Some highlights here include a famous clock whose bells mark the beginning of a new year, the old Post Office that serves as the office of the President of Madrid, a mounted statue of Charles III of Spain and the statue of the city’s symbol- the Bear and the Strawberry Tree.

Plaza Mayor (Spanish for ‘Main Square’)

The Plaza Mayor is both a central plaza and a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture located close to Puerta del Sol in Madrid. This early 17th century rectangular superstructure is triangulated by nine entrance gates and several three-story residential buildings with more than 230 balconies. A central hallmark of this plaza is a 400 year old bronze statue of King Philip III.

Palacio Real (Spanish for ‘Royal Palace’)

The Royal Palace is the official residence of the King of Spain, though the royal family does not actually reside here and thus leaving the palace being used for major ceremonies. It is scenically located on a bluff overlooking the river valley and features alpha grade architecture and opulently decorated rooms dotted with tapestries, frescoes and carvings. It is flanked by the Farmacia (Pharmacy) and the Real Armorial (or Royal Armory).

Best Time to fly to Madrid

The best times to fly to Madrid are the spring and fall seasons that run from March to May and September to November respectively. The temperature varies from 50 to 70 deg F during these times and one can enjoy festivals like Fiesta de San Isidro and Feria del Libro (in May) and Autumn Festival in October. Budget travelers can visit the city during the winter season from December to February. It is very cold and the temperature may drop to 30 deg F, but one gets to enjoy events like Three Kings Day and Madrid Carnaval besides lower hotel and flight rates.
