Explore Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad (also known as Amdavad or Karnavati) is the largest city and former capital of the Indian state of Gujarat. The city is situated on the banks of the Sabarmati River and is situated about 30 kilometers from the state capital and its twin city, Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Aashram is home to one of the most significant events in India’s struggle for freedom- the Dandi March in 1930 that had later proved to be the decisive factor in overthrowing the British Raj. Ahmedabad is also home to the world's largest collection of antique cars, one of the world’s finest textile museums and one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of hand-written Jain manuscripts. The city’s architecture is replete with a mix of Indian and Persian styles (or the Indo-Saracenic style), the best of which can be seen in Bhadra Fort and and Sidi Saiyyed Mosque.
Things to do in Ahmedabad
Sabarmati Ashram
Sabarmati Ashram (also known as Gandhi Ashram, Harijan Ashram or Satyagraha Ashram) was one of the residences of Father of the Nation- Mahatma Gandhi, who lived here with his wife. This riverside ashram alongside the Sabarmati River was the launching pad of one of India’s leading unarmed resistance movements against the British Raj, the Dandi March, in 1930. This iconic ashram also contains a museum dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, called the Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya. It contains thousands of letters written to and by Gandhi, and his photographs and books.
Kankaria Lake
Kankaria Lake (formerly known as Hauj-e-Qutb) is the second largest lake in Ahmedabad. This mid-15th century lake is known for its well developed lakefront and is studded with a zoo, a toy train, balloon rides, Water Park and other entertainment facilities. The Kanakaria Lake is built in the shape of a vast 34-sided regular polygon and also has a beautiful garden, called Nagina Wadi. This island is home to a small summer palace that flaunts a tree-lined walkway and was originally built for Mughal kings.
Bhadra Fort
Built during early 15th century, the Bhadra Fort is situated in the walled city area of Ahmedabad. It is home to a superb arrangement of ornate royal palaces (including the beautiful summer palace called Nagina Baugh) and Ahmed Shah Mosque besides 14 towers and 8 gates. Its eastern side is flanked by a triple gateway known as Teen Darwaza which is associated with many historical events and common folklores. The Bhadra fort is a glorious example of Indo-Sarcenic architecture and features ornately designed arches and balconies laced with lattice works on the adjoining windows and murals.
Best Time to fly to Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad’s hot and semi-arid climate is characterized by very hot and dry summers and mild chilly winters. Visitors will find the best time to visit here during the winter season from November to February when the temperature is between 28 and 32 deg C.
