If you’re traveling from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Baltimore, Maryland, it’s essential to know a bit more about the airport hub -- and the city itself -- you’ll be visiting. The Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport is the busiest of three airports in this area. It's also the second-largest, in terms of the number of departures, for Southwest Airlines. In 2016, 25.1 million passengers traveled through BWI, and it was ranked as the best airport for its size in 2010.
When you travel to BWI, you will find shops, restaurants, meditation spaces, art exhibits, and even a gym upon arrival. With 50 different stores and 50 different restaurants, a long BWI layover can actually be quite enjoyable. As an added bonus, BWI does not add premium pricing to its food and drink options, which means budget travelers can eat at the airport without paying too much.
But once you’ve had your fill of the airport, it’s time to get to know Maryland's Charm City. Known for its quirkiness and welcoming feel, Baltimore is also the hometown of countless American legends -- including Babe Ruth, Billie Holiday, John Waters, and Edgar Allen Poe. This historic and eclectic city has got it all: sports, food, music, nature, culture, and so much more.
After you find cheap airline tickets to Baltimore, you’ll find plenty to do here. You can score tickets to an Orioles game, listen to live music, learn about our nation’s history, and sample some of the most delectable local seafood around.
Want to find out more about marine life? The National Aquarium is a great place for both adults and kids to “sea” creatures of the water and even pet some stingrays. You can also take a water taxi to get a first-hand glimpse of Baltimore’s beauty. If you’re more into landmarks, check out Fort McHenry, the site that inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star-Spangled Banner.” You can even visit the home in which the original American flag was sewn. Or you can visit the original Washington Monument, follow Maryland’s Civil War trails, trek along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway, tour the colonial St. Mary’s City, visit the house of the man who wrote “The Raven,” and so much more.
Of course, it’s not all about learning in Baltimore -- there are tons of opportunities to simply have some fun, too. Go to the American Film Institute’s theater (which was built in 1938) for a movie screening, see a Chesapeake Shakespeare Company or a Cumberland Theatre production, attend a famous bluegrass festival, take a ride on the National Harbor Capital Wheel, visit the Maryland Zoo, take a trip down the man-made rapids at Adventure Sports Center International, bring the family to Adventure Park USA, soak in some sun at the beach, set sail on a real pirate ship, go on a hike or bike ride, experience the local wine trails, or do some shopping in one of the many retail locations around the area.
You’ll probably have trouble whittling down the list of attractions you want to fit in to your GRR to BWI itinerary.
After booking Cheap Flights from Grand Rapids to Baltimore, be sure to plan ahead for one of these convenient transportation options.
From the airport, you can take a train (including Amtrak) or bus, rent a car, ride a shuttle, take a taxi, or hail a ride from an app. There are also local buses, a subway, trains, trolleys, bike-sharing, water taxis, Lyft rides, and other ways to get around the city. Baltimore is also a highly walkable city, making it even easier for travelers to get where they need to go.
