Explore Hyderabad
Hyderabad is the capital of the southern Indian state of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh. One of India’s three Information Technology hotspots, this late 16th century city doubles up as a confluence of three regional medieval regal powers - the Qutb Shahi, Nizami and Mughal. Hyderabad enthralls its visitors with its spectacular combination of various architectural and culinary styles. The former is visible in its state-of-the-art monuments like Golconda Fort and the Charminar, while the latter comes to the fore with the world-famous Hyderabadi Biryani and Hyderabadi haleem cuisines. Hyderabad is also home to the Telugu film industry, which is India’s second-largest producer of motion pictures.
The Charminar
Built in 1591, the Charminar (literally, ‘Four Minarets’) is Hyderabad’s numero uno highlight. It is a riverside monument and mosque along Musi River, neatly flanked by Laad Bazaar (a famous market for bangles) and the Mecca Masjid (it is fabled to be built of soil and stones brought from the Holy Mecca). This mosque is built as a grand square of 20 meters per side and bounded by four grand arches with an exquisitely designed minaret on each side.
Golkonda
Golkonda (or ‘a round hill’) or Golla konda (or ‘the Shepherd’s Hill’) is a citadel and fort situated 11 kilometers away from Hyderabad. It used to serve as the capital of the Qutb Shahi dynasty (1518-1687 AD) and the famous Koh-i-Noor diamond was mined here. This grand fort is a sum of four distinct forts with a 10 kilometer long outer wall, and one of its enclosures leads to the ‘Fateh Darwaza’ (or the Victory Gate), which is popular for its architectural marvel.
