Explore Kolkata
Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and a prominent commercial and military port in eastern India. This riverside city on the Hooghly River is also called the Cultural Capital of India because it served as the epicenter of 19th century Bengal Renaissance and is now home to the Bengali film industry. The city has produced many famous poets, writers, film producers and even Noble Prize laureates. The city welcomes its visitors with its colonial architecture, scenic gardens and historic colleges- and then there’s its crazy love for football.
Things to do in Kolkata
Howrah Bridge
Howrah Bridge is the busiest and sixth-longest cantilever bridge in the world. Built as one of four bridges on the Hooghly River in the city of Kolkata, it was the also third-longest cantilever bridge when it was constructed. It derived its name because it connected the two cities of Howrah and Kolkata in West Bengal. It was later renamed to Rabindra Setu in the honor of the first Indian (and Asian) Nobel laureate and eminent Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore.
Sundarban National Park
Sunderban National Park is a world-famous tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve based in the Ganges Delta and located about 60 miles from Kolkata. This delta is home to one of the largest reserves for the Bengal tigers in India in addition to a large variety of flora and fauna. Consequently, the Sunderban National Park derives the reputation of being home to several species of birds, reptiles and invertebrate species including salt- water crocodile.
Dakshineswar Kali Temple
The Dakshineswar Kali Temple is a prominent Hindu temple in Dakshineswar, a town located less than 8 miles from Kolkata. This riverside temple on the banks of Hooghly River is devoted to Bhavatarini (an incarnation of Goddess Kali) who liberates Her devotees from worldly desires. The Dakshineswar Kali Temple is also a classical masterpiece of traditional Bengali Navaratna architectural style and flaunts a 46-feet high and nine-spired complex, 12 shrines and a temple of Radha-Krishna.
Best Time to Fly to Kolkata
The best time to fly to Kolkata is the winter season from October to March. It is the most perfect time of the year to visit because it includes two of the city’s biggest cultural festivals, Durga Puja and Deepawali. The former, in particular, has a stronger influence with beautiful idols of Goddess Durga dotting all parts of the city. Budget travelers can visit Kolkata during the summer season in April and May. One can enjoy lower air fares and hotel rates because the tourist influx is reduced owing to oppressive heat.
