Dodda Basavana Gudi (or the Nandi Temple)
The Dodda Basavana Gudi in Bangalore is believed to house one of the largest Nandi statues in the world. This temple is exclusively dedicated to Nandi, a demi-god who serves the most powerful Hindu deity- Lord Shiva. This temple was built Bangalore’s founder Kempe Gowda in 1537 in Vijayanagara architectural style. The temple is also the focal point of a groundnut fair which is held every year in the Hindu month of Karthika Maasa (overlapping October and November months).
Lalbagh Botanical Gardens or Lal Bagh
The Lalbagh Botanical Gardens in Bangalore are home to India's largest collection of tropical plants and are known for their late 19th century Glass House which is built like the famous Crystal Palace of London. This glass house hosts two annual flower shows, one each on India’s Republic Day (26 January) and the other on its Independence Day (15 August). This park also features some rare species of plants brought from other parts of the world and watered using a state-of-the-art irrigation system.
St. Mary's Basilica
The St. Mary's Basilica is the oldest church in Bangalore and is the only church in the state of Karnataka to be granted the status of a minor basilica. It is an architectural delight of Gothic architecture and features ornately designed arches, ornamental motifs and stained glass windows that all can be seen from a distance. It is best to visit here in the month of September as the city is all soaked in the festivities of St. Mary's Feast.
Best Time to Fly to Bangalore
Bangalore is a year-round destination because of its high elevation and moderate climate. However, it is best to visit here in the winter season from October to February to enjoy its biggest festival- Deepawali and to see the city’s parks at their glorious best. Travelers with a budget crunch can visit here in the rainy season from June to September. While the city experiences heavy but intermittent showers, visitors can still enjoy their trip through the city without much trouble.
