Explore Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad (also known as Amdavad) is the largest city and former state capital of Gujarat and fifth most populous city in India. Founded in 11th century, this riverside city along the Sabarmati River is situated less than 20 miles away from its twin city and state capital- Gandhinagar. Ahmedabad assumed pole position in India’s freedom movement and nationalist sentiments, starting from Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha Ashram in 1917 and the launch of Dandi Salt March. Owing to its over 1000 year of celebrated existence, this city is a colorful bouquet of art, architecture, culinary arts, culture and festivals.
Things to do in Ahmedabad
Gandhi Ashram
Gandhi Aashram (or Sabarmati Aashram) is the former residence of Mahatma Gandhi. This tranquil riverside abode was founded by the national leader in 1915 and is the single most significant attraction of the city because it was the launching site of his historic Dandi March in 1930. It features several of Gandhi’s personal items and a handicrafts centre, a handmade paper factory and a spinning wheel factory.
Calico Textile Museum
The Calico Textile Museum is one of the world’s finest textile museums and it is housed inside a traditional carved wooden mansion (locally called ‘haveli’). It is home to a remarkable collection of rare textiles, furniture and temple artifacts made in the state during last 400 years. Also of note here is a reference library on textiles and two thematic sections dedicated to marbles, sandstones and bronze figures.
Jama Masjid or Jumma Masjid
The nearly 600-year old Jama Masjid (Urdu terms for Friday Mosque) is thought to be the largest mosque in the Indian subcontinent of its period. It is a glorious sum of religious significance and artistic craftsmanship in Ahmedabad and is located near two prominent city landmarks called the Bhadra Fort and Teen Darwaza. The mosque is flanked by the tombs of its founder king Ahmed Shah I and his family members.
Best time to fly to Ahmedabad
Ahmedabad experiences very hot and dry summers and mild chilly winters. It would thus be best to visit here during the winter season that runs from November to February when the city comfortably placed between 28 and 32 deg C amidst sparse rainfall. Budget travelers can visit here in the summer season from March to June. Since it is very hot with almost zero rainfall, one can avail cheaper flight and accommodation rates owing to lesser tourist influx.
