Noted as the country’s business epicenter, Belize City is more of a great starting point for exploration of the lush landscape than a metropolis destination. As such, the port town has easy access to some of Central America’s best ruins, cays, reefs and wildlife.
Must-See Mayan Ruins- Only 30 minutes from Belize City, Altun Ha is a well-preserved site that allows visitors to climb atop the ancient stone structures. The Sun God Temple is featured on the labels of Belize’s Belikin beer, and the large jade sun god sculpture archaeologists recovered from the site can be seen on the nation’s banknotes.
- Three hours outside Belize City sit the Caracol Mayan ruins, a large archeological site that was one of the largest ancient Mayan cities. The ruins aren’t as meticulously excavated as some others, giving the elaborate carvings and steep stone steps an additional layer of verdant jungle beauty.
Most Impressive Attractions- Set in crystal-clear turquoise waters, the Hol Chan Reef features wildlife aplenty. Snorkelers and divers marvel at the diversity of marine life, from nurse sharks to sea turtles to stingrays, not to mention the beautiful coral that makes up the habitat.
- Actun Tunichil Muknal provides an experience unlike anything found -- or allowed -- in many other countries: the opportunity to trek, swim and clamber through a narrow yet fascinatingly historic cave. Located 117 kilometers from Belize City, the site is littered with leftover Mayan artifacts and even human skeletons.
