Johnny Adolphson/ShutterstockBest Weekend Ever: Head to Salt Lake City, Utah or Savannah, Georgia Ainsley Robertson October 15, 2015 Adventure Travel, Arts & History, Beach Vacations, Family Travel, Food & Drink, Interests, Trending Stories What are your plans this weekend? If you’re feeling spontaneous, we’d suggest heading to Utah’s capital city, Salt Lake City, or head to Georgia’s coastal city of Savannah! Why? Both cities were finalists in this year’s CheapOair Owards – Salt Lake City for Most Effortless and Savannah for Most Affordable. Regardless of which you choose to visit, both are excellent choices for this particular weekend. Read more to find out why! If You’re Headed to Salt Lake City Andrew Zarivny/Shutterstock When you think of Salt Lake City, you probably think mostly of winter sports – skiing, snowboarding, and other snowy, outdoorsy activities. Fall, however, is a gorgeous time to visit – think foliage and fun! 5th Annual Ginormous Pumpkin Regatta Craig Sterken/Shutterstock First of all, if the name of this event alone doesn’t make you want to go, we’re not sure what else will. What does this entail, exactly? Well, it’s exactly what it sounds like, folks. “Ginormous” pumpkins are carved out, loaded into the pond at Sugar House Park, and essentially used as boats. Two fully grown adults attempt to row them without sinking to the bottom of the pond. How much does a “ginormous” pumpkin weigh, you ask? Anywhere from 600 to 1,700 pounds – not the typical size you’d find at the local pumpkin patch. It’s quite a site to see – you won’t want to miss it. University of Utah Utes vs. Arizona State David Lee/Shutterstock After spending the day in Salt Lake with those ginormous pumpkins, there’s no better way to enjoy your Saturday night than with some college football. Head to Rice-Eccles Stadium to catch the action – tickets start at $68. If you don’t want to drop that much money on the game, head to The Green Pig Pub to catch the game with a side of nachos and wings. Empty stomach recommended upon entry. Take A Hike! Johnny Adolphson/Shutterstock Seriously, you’ll want to take a hike while you’re here – don’t even leave town. Cecret Lake is one of Salt Lake’s most popular hiking spots. Famous for its summer wildflowers, you’ll be impressed by how photogenic it is. Soak in the beauty of the capital city’s natural beauty while you’re there. If You’re Headed to Savannah Joseph Sohm/Shutterstock When in Georgia, Savannah is a must-see. And there’s no better time to visit than in October – Savannah is one of the most popular spooky spots to visit right around Halloween. Visit the Sorrel-Weed House Natalia Bratslavsky/Shutterstock With architecture from the 1800s, some of Savannah’s buildings are inevitably haunted – especially the Sorrel-Weed House. It’s been featured on multiple TV shows, including HGTV’s “If Walls Could Talk,” the Travel Channel’s “The Most Terrifying Places in America,” and was investigated on “Ghost Hunters.” Not enough to convince you that it’s haunted? Go check it out for yourself on a Paranormal Ghost Tour. If you’re not into the haunted aspect of it, we’d recommend visiting in daylight – it’s also known for something not-so-spooky—the opening scene of Forrest Gump was filmed here. Do yourself a favor and pay this place a visit. It’s worth it. Kid-Friendly Tours Natalia Bratslavsky/Shutterstock If you’d prefer to steer clear from the spooky stuff, take a Riverboat Cruise or an Old Town Trolley Tour of the beautiful city! Sit back and relax with these unique views of the city – spend the day learning about Savannah and its rich history, along with hot spots to visit later on in the day. Head to Tybee Island Jon Bilous/Shutterstock Though it’s not summer anymore, it’s still warm down in Georgia! Only 20 minutes east of Savannah, this little beach is worth spending the afternoon at. Sunbathing, swimming, biking, sailing, fishing – pick your activity and enjoy the day! Now that you have all these spectacular options, we’ve confident that you’ll have a killer weekend. Whether it be Salt Lake City or Savannah, we know you’ll have fun! Did you get a chance to vote in this year’s CheapOair Owards? If not, hang tight! We’ll be announcing the winners on October 20th. Stay tuned to find out if Salt Lake City and Savannah are winners. We’ll be live tweeting the big reveal event on the @CheapOair account — be sure to follow us!
